Robbie Fulks and Linda Gail Lewis: Wild, Wild, Wild

Posted by Paul van den Hout On November - 5 - 2018

Linda Gail Lewis was asked by Robbie Fulks to collaborate on this CD ‘Wild, Wild, Wild’: a varied compilation of historical styles in (country and rock ‘n’roll) music from The South, and particularly Memphis it seems, stretching from the ‘30’s to the ‘70’s.

Both Lewis and Fulks are veterans in the music recording industry. Piano playing singer Linda Gail Lewis is of course the little sister of Jerry Lee Lewis and Robbie Fulks, with a background in bluegrass music, was nominated a Grammy-award as an alternative country singer-songwriter.

Most of the material on ‘Wild, Wild, Wild’ is written by Fulks and most songs are duets. Some of the songs seem written for Linda Gail exclusively like ‘Round Too Long’ and ‘Boogie-Woogie Country Girl’, one can say biographical songs. In the latter you can’t deny hearing her big brother’s living spirit, instrumentally and vocally. The piano is pumped by Linda Gail herself of course, but she also proves to be sensitive and elegant in ballads like ‘Hardluck Louisiana’.

Pinup of the week: Miss Katie

Posted by Dee-Ann On October - 15 - 2018

I think I’ve always identified with pin ups, I think as a kid I always thought they were so beautiful and not like the images I saw in magazines.

I live in the dry dry oil patch called Hobbs NM.

I’ve worked for a Dance Studio for almost 6 years now and it’s been my dream job I love it so much, I work another job in merchandise during the day to help cover bills. I think I got into pin up when I needed something, it’s helped me bring through more self confidence and self assurance as well as bring me and a few of my girlfriends closer, they let me do their hair and make up and we play dress up and take pictures, its fun. I hope pin up will always be a part of my life.

Pinup of the week: Miss Tamika Marie

Posted by Dee-Ann On October - 8 - 2018

My name is Tamika Marie.

I’m from southern Germany and love vintage style, mermaiding and all things Disney. I am biracial and growing up, I struggled with finding my identity. I never really felt like I fit in. I looked so different from both sides of my family. My mom introduced me to classic film musicals and I always loved the style of clothes the women wore. Especially in the 1940s and 50s. Now I love dressing in the vintage style and feel like I have come into my own and gained a lot of confidence.

I called “Dre en Tee Video Gasten uit Rotterdam”, two Dutch men from Rotterdam, who make videoclips and promotional video’s. They already made a video for our song “I’m gone”:

Pinup of the week: Miss Bibi

Posted by Dee-Ann On July - 30 - 2018

Photographer: James Berry

My uniqueness as a mom, wife and teacher just in a few words shows my sweet and sassy side like a 1950’s red Chevy with red and white interior riding along in South Florida. So being a girl from the hot city of Miami of beautiful bright colors and historic locations. Finding the pinup community in South Florida gave me the chance to express my old soul for vintage and natural beauty. I have been in the pinup community for about five years and learning everyday about myself and embracing the uniqueness of the 50’s. I didn’t decide one day “hey I want to start to dress like a girl from the 50’s”. As a child my mother always told me I had an old soul and love dressing like Audrey Hepburn and Carmen Miranda (just two of the many woman I admire), but I embraced the style behind the beauty of these women into my own unique style and sass. Being a pinup mom has not changed the way I parent because my boys are free spirited, enjoy life, old music and fast cars just like their momma. Being a mom, a wife, teacher and pinup is the best gift I have received and it all comes together like the sweet topping on a delicious peach cobbler eating on a warm sunny day.

Slapback Johnny – Hit me up (Album review)

Posted by Dee-Ann On July - 27 - 2018

Slapback Johnny’s debut album Hit me up is out now! They have been hitting the stages since 2012, and now we can enjoy them in our very homes, cars or even at work. They have succeeded to grab their high speed energetic rockabilly together and press it into this album.

13 original songs written by Richard (drums) and Rex (Guitars), sung by Peter (double bass). Added horns by Tim Blonk, Lodewijk Reijs and A. Schouten. Piano and Hammond by R. Van Gasteren. Released by Rhythm bomb records. The cd sleeve, with a big hog head on the center, is designed by kustom.be.

It opens with a machine gun fire, oh no wait, it’s Richard’s drum roll starting the first song “Bombshell” an homage to the women so beautiful and sexy, they make heads turn once they enter the room. Peter’s raw voice and Rex’s guitar sound and -riffs gives us all the basic rockabilly ingredients we need.

Pinup of the week: Lelah May Hula

As a New Orleanian, I have adopted a vintage, retro, rockabilly style that is right at home in a city that loves traditional jazz music, swing dancing, blues, and rock’n’roll.

I have been dancing with a group called the Nola Chorus Girls for five years, and we perform at local venues, festivals, and our many, many parades for all occasions. We wear original vintage-inspired costumes and dance to jazz and swing standards as performed by wonderful local musicians. I started hula hooping five years ago, as well, and while I’m not the most skilled, I am a pretty good hoop dancer with a few tricks up my sleeve (or around my waist, I guess!)

Pinup of the week: Sarah Jane

Posted by Dee-Ann On July - 2 - 2018

Photographer: Beth Cocuzzi/ Pussycat Pinups

My name is Sarah Jane. I am a healthcare professional specializing in Gerontology and, currently, going for my Master’s at USC. I hope to one day become a vital part of the elder community and produce change and hope for our aging population. I’m a single mother of a 2-yr old rockstar named Dax and love all extreme outdoor activities. Hiking, running, backpacking, camping, white-water rafting, ziplining…you name it! When I’m not going getting my blood rushing, I love to sit down and read a good book and cook a good meal with some reggaeton, country, blues or rockabilly on blast.

Pinup has always been a soft spot for me and I find everything about it beautiful and creative.Every woman has the right to feel mysterious, sexy, seductive and classy.

Barrence Whitfield – Soul Flowers of Titan review

Posted by Dee-Ann On June - 18 - 2018

The second new album Soul Flowers of Titan from Boston’s Barrence Whitfield and the Savages is out on Bloodshot records. It was inspired by the cosmic outlook of Sun Ra and elaborates on the Cincinnati-based King Records and Federal Records sounds of the 1950s-’60s.

I’ve seen Barrence live a few times in the 90’s and also more recently a few years ago. He is so energetic, never a dull moment on stage with Barrence. In his voice you hear a touch of Screaming Jay Hawkins.

The album opens with a “flat tire” rhythm “Slowly Losing My Mind” supported by a sixties-ish Hammond sound and naughty trumpet solo.

Al Dual – Blue’s Back in Town (album review)

Posted by Dee-Ann On June - 11 - 2018

Al Dual, a good looking Spanish guitarist, has been awarded the Ameripolitan Music Awards Memphis 2018, and he and his band has just been included in the prestigious rockabilly Hall Of Fame. He played with numerous artists such as Charlie Hightone (Spain), Chris Casello (USA), Ashley Kingman, Eddie Nichols, Paul Pigat (Canada), Lisa Pankratz, Mike Sánchez (UK), Sue Moreno (NL), Chan Romero & many more.

Al’s latest release in vinyl is called Blue’s Back in Town and is recorded in Sun Records Studio.

If you’d tell me Blue’s Back In Town was a 1956 record, I think I would believe it.  They really succeeded in creating that authentic sound. Remember the song “All I can do is cry” (1956) from Wayne Walker? It would fit perfectly next to the four original songs of Al Dual.
