Rhythm ’56; feel the German rhythm

Rhythm '56 live on stageRhythm ’56 is classical rockabilly band from the north of Germany.
The band was founded in 2004 as a project of fun.
The band members are Bernd “Sun-Billy” Tesch (standup bass and lead vocals), Jürgen “Brett-Billy” Gleba (guitar and backing vocals), Tillmann “Sharp dressed Billy” Scharf (drums) and sometimes as additional piano player Mace Sharp.
Sometimes they also play as a “Sun Rockabilly” trio without drums but with 2nd acoustic guitar.
They’re influenced by the great heroes from the fifties, like Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Burnette, Gene Vincent and Johnny Cash, but they play the classic songs in their own style and occasionally they write their own song.
I asked the guys from Germany a few questions to get to know them:Bernd "Sun Billy"

Tell us about how you started Rhythm ‘56
It was just fun and love to the music of our heroes. Everybody of us is still playing in different projects. With Rhythm`56 we could play our passion songs.

Do you perform only in Germany or elsewhere in Europe?
We would perform everywhere in Europe, but most shows are running in Germany.

Is there any place you would really like to play?
Las Vegas Weekender maybe.. :-), seriously any place is welcome. We need to be close to the crowd. That´s important to us.

Who are you’re favourite artists?
So many: Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Johnny Burnette, Jerry Lee Lewis, Brian Setzer, tbc.

Would you rather be a teenager in the 50’s?
Yes, in Memphis.

Do you like other music styles too, other than rock and roll?
Sure, music is a universal language. There is so much good music in the world.
Great Neo Rockabilly by unknown bands, blues, jazz, swing. We love handmade music. Important is the passion of making music. We don`t like these “plastic TV casting crap”.

Will you only perform and have fun or also release a CD?
We are just working on it. In 2004 we made a record “back to the roots” but it´s out of stock.
Last winter we recorded around 12 songs and now we are doing the mastering and artwork.

Do you remember an funny incident during a performance?
One day we had a Trio show and our drummer became ill. It was a party of a Rockabilly Club. So cancelling the show was not an option. We call Carsten, brother of Bernd, and he came with his acoustic guitar. So we played like Elvis, Bill and Scotty.
It was fantastic and the crowd went totally mad. Great night and Carsten became a inofficial band member for life.

Do you have a fanclub and how important are the fans to you?
Fans are so important. I guess we don´t have a fanclub but a lot of fans of Rock`n`Roll music.

How do you see yourself in 10 years?
Still playing together with fun and passion.

What’s your greatest wish for the future?
To be healthy and the chance to play more music.

Is there anything you would like to tell?
Don´t be a music purist. There are so many good bands out there who like Rock`n` Roll in their own way. And that´s how it works. If people are enjoying them and having fun it`s fantastic. It´s music not science.  Rhythm '56 with add. piano player
