Showgirl Adventure: Local talent!

Posted by RubyJoule On January - 11 - 20114,356 views

Well, I had several adventures picked out for your amusement today, but all of my notes are back at Maison de Ruby, and I am holed up at the Ritz-Carlton in Dallas, waiting out a winter storm. Admittedly, things could be worse! But we’ll save that adventure for another time.  Instead, I would love to introduce you to some amazingly talented people I have the pleasure of working with lately…

Steve DeMent is one of Austin’s premiere live burlesque photographers.  After establishing himself as an official league photographer for the Texas Rollergirls roller derby, he expanded into shooting live burlesque shows.  He was inspired in part by the iconic photo book, “The Velvet Hammer Burlesque,” chronicling the LA burlesque troupe of the same name.  Steve began shooting performances by my troupe, The Jigglewatts, in 2007 and has been a staple on the Austin burlesque scene ever since.

He’s also teamed up with makeup artist extraordinaire, Wendy Sanders of Blood and Glitter Makeup (see her column here!), to offer studio style pin-up photography packages to glamour girls near and far.  Silver Screen Pinups is the name of this endeavor, and I had the pleasure of shooting with Steve in the studio last week. I must say he lives up to the image and is a genius at capturing that old Hollywood look.  You can see some more of his work here.  (And I will be posting our latest photos shortly!)

Cleavage Chronicles: If the Girls Could Talk! Is the brainchild of Pamela K. Ingalls, and she has asked me to bring a bit of burlesque flair to the project.  It is a documentary film celebrating women and their breasts, and includes personal stories and interviews with women and men of all walks of life- from exotic dancers to breast cancer survivors to pin-up girls.  It will also include footage of the live variety show, “Everybody *heart*s Boobs!” which is slated to open in February.  In it, I will perform my Gypsy Rose Lee tribute, “A Lovely Pair.”  Hey, it fits the theme, no?  Pamela is collecting stories and interviews from all over the world, and you can learn more at

Everybody loves....?

Recently it has come to my attention that a former member of Velvet Hammer Burlesque has set up shop in Austin, Texas under the name “Coco Coquette” and is designing custom wigs and other fabulous accessories for showgirls, drag queens, carnies, harlots, dreamgirls and girlfriends!  She is also producing acclaimed fashion/burlesque spectaculars, the second of which will be in celebration of Valentine’s Day, titled “Cherchez la Femme.”  I am thrilled to be modeling in the finale of this show, wearing a bridal showstopper designed by Chia Guillory and dancing to Billy Idols’s “White Wedding.”  More details about Coco Coquette (née Allyson Garro) and her fabulous atelier can be found here.  Like Fifi Mahoney’s in New Orleans? You’ll LOVE Coco Coquette!

Till next week, stay warm!
